🌊 The Ripple Effect – Music Therapy Ed

Small musical choices can grow into something meaningful. With this session idea you can help clients explore how small musical moments can grow into powerful experiences of teamwork, confidence, and self-expression.
Instructions:
- Introduce the theme
- Keep it simple to start
- You start the idea with one sound or invite one client to create a single sound using their voice, body percussion, or an instrument
- Pass the ripple
- Prompt the next client to repeat the first sound and then add one new one of their own
- Continue around the group so each person repeats what came before and adds something new
- If in an individual session, take turns going back and forth with your client instead of passing it around the circle
- Build a pattern
- Once several sounds have been added, have the group continuously cycle through the entire sequence together for several repetitions before introducing another new sound, ensuring everyone has an opportunity to internalize the pattern.
- Begin maintaining a steady beat on guitar, piano, drum, etc to provide a consistent rhythm for clients as they continue the pattern
- Add dynamics and expression
- Once the pattern is well established, invite clients to change how the ripple sounds
- Example prompts:
- “What would a calm ripple sound like?”
- “What would an excited ripple sound like?”
- “Can we make the ripple grow louder?”
- “Can we make it fade away?”
- “Can we make the ripple move faster or slower?”
- Connect the music to real life
- This is a good time to pause and encourage reflection
- Example prompts:
- “What happened when one person added something small?”
- “How di dthe music change when everyone joined in?”
- “What is one small thing you can do that might make a positive difference for yourself or someone else?”
- “What is one small step you chose that you are proud of?”
- Create a group ripple song
- You can choose to utilize parts of the reflective discussion to create a short song or chant
- Example:
- One small sound can start the song,
- One small choice can move us along.
- Round and round, we hear it grow,
- Every person helps the music flow.
- Optional adaptations:
- Add a leadership moment- offer clients opportunities to lead the ripple as a conductor
- Takeaways
- Invite clients to identify one “small ripple” they would like to carry with them beyond the session by choosing a simple action they can apply to their daily life or a current situation they are experiencing. Emphasize that even small, intentional actions can create meaningful change over time.
- Examples:
- “I will try one new thing”
- “I will take one deep breath”
- “I will be kind to someone”
- “I will keep practicing”
- “I will ask for help”
